Producer Information

Simonsig is synonymous with the history of the South African wine industry, the Stellenbosch wine region, and the Malan family name. These elements are intertwined in this family-owned farm, where the late Frans Malan produced the first bottle of our much-loved Kaapse Vonkel, South AfricaŹ¼s first Cap Classique made in the classic bottle-fermented style. He is also honoured for co-founding the thriving Stellenbosch Wine Route, a first in its time. Today, his legacy lives on through his sons, Francois and Johan, and grandchildren Christelle and Michael, the 2nd and 3rd Malan generations at Simonsig.

Chenin Blanc was the first wine released by Simonsig in 1968, which makes it so apt that the Langbult Steen is our first wine with Old Vine status. In 2023, we also celebrated 55 years of consecutive Chenin Blanc vintages for Simonsig. The Langbult Steen vineyard has been tended to by three generations of the Malan family, meaning we truly have an intimate knowledge of the soil and working with the cultivar.

Vineyard / Terroir / Climate The slope against which this 6 hectare single vineyard "Langbult Steen" is planted ensures good drainage of excess water. The slope gets most of its sun in the morning and in the afternoon the sun disappears behind the hill leaving the vines in the cooler shady conditions, protected from direct sun. In mid summer, the close proximity of the cold Atlantic Ocean has a major cooling effect as in the afternoons, the southerly winds blow from False Bay, which is a mere 15 kilometers away. The Atlantic breeze results in very cool night time temperatures and this plays a major role to preserve the natural acidity in the grapes.
